Traveling

  1. Planning Your Trip:
    • Travel Arrangements: Book your flights and accommodation well in advance. Major cities with shooting ranges include Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio.
    • Transporting Firearms: If you plan to bring your own firearms, familiarize yourself with airline policies and TSA regulations for transporting guns and ammunition.
  2. Local Transportation:
    • Car Rental: Consider renting a car, as it provides flexibility in reaching the range and exploring the area.
    • Public Transport: Check if your destination offers public transport options, but note that it may be less convenient for reaching specific ranges.
  3. Accommodation:
    • Proximity to Range: Choose lodging near the shooting range to reduce travel time and stress.
    • Safety & Security: Ensure your accommodation has secure storage for your firearms if you bring them.

Laws

  1. Firearm Laws in Texas:
    • Ownership: Texas has relatively permissive firearm ownership laws. You can generally own and possess firearms if you are a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
    • Concealed Carry: Texas requires a License to Carry (LTC) for concealed carry. Open carry is also permitted with an LTC.
  2. Range-Specific Regulations:
    • Range Rules: Each indoor range may have its own set of rules and regulations. Make sure to review these before visiting.
    • Ammunition Restrictions: Some ranges may have restrictions on types of ammunition (e.g., no steel-core or armor-piercing rounds).
  3. Legal Age:
    • Minimum Age: Generally, you must be at least 18 years old to shoot at a range in Texas. However, minors may shoot under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian.

Communicating Skill Level

  1. Before the Visit:
    • Inform the Range: Let the shooting range know your skill level beforehand so they can tailor their services to your needs, such as arranging for a range officer or instructor.
    • Group Bookings: If you’re visiting with a group, provide details about the collective skill levels to ensure a smooth experience.
  2. On Arrival:
    • Discuss Goals: Communicate your goals and any specific training needs with the range staff or instructors.
    • Ask for Guidance: Don’t hesitate to ask for advice or tips if you’re unsure about your skill level or how to use certain equipment.

Firearm Safety

  1. Basic Safety Rules:
    • Always Treat Firearms as Loaded: Even if you believe a firearm is unloaded, always handle it with the assumption that it is loaded.
    • Keep the Muzzle Pointed in a Safe Direction: Always point the firearm away from yourself and others.
    • Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger: Your finger should be outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.
  2. Range Etiquette:
    • Follow Range Commands: Listen carefully to range officers and follow their instructions.
    • Safety Gear: Wear appropriate safety gear, including ear protection and shooting glasses.
  3. Handling Firearms:
    • Proper Storage: Keep firearms unloaded when not in use and securely store them as required by the range.
    • Handling Techniques: Practice safe handling techniques, including proper grip and stance.

The Exciting Experience of Shooting

  1. Unique Experiences:
    • Variety of Firearms: Texas ranges often offer a wide range of firearms to try, from handguns to rifles and shotguns.
    • Special Events: Look out for special events or competitions that might coincide with your visit for a unique shooting experience.
  2. Skill Development:
    • Training Opportunities: Take advantage of lessons or training sessions to improve your skills and make the most of your shooting experience.
    • Challenge Yourself: Set personal goals or challenges to enhance the excitement and satisfaction of shooting.
  3. Enjoying the Atmosphere:
    • Social Aspect: Many ranges have a friendly and supportive community. Engage with fellow shooters to share experiences and tips.
    • Memorable Moments: Capture the experience with photos (where permitted) and enjoy the thrill of hitting your targets.

Here’s what you’ll need to shoot on the range:
  1. You must provide identification, such as a passport or state ID.
  2. Closed-toe shoes are required, and it’s recommended to avoid low-cut clothing as the brass from a fully-automatic firearm can be hot. Hearing and vision protection can be rented or purchased at the range and is mandatory for shooting.
  3. All guests must view and understand the safety video and sign the necessary waiver before entering a shooting lane.
  4. Shooters under the age of 18 must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or legal guardian at all times. No one under the age of 7 is allowed on the range. Minors are not allowed to have their own lane, and the parent or guardian must stay within arm’s length of the minor at all times while on the range.
