To make things simple we listed recommended steps below to make sure you complete the state requirements.

1. TAKE CLASSROOM PORTION

4 hour min – 6 hour course max: This section covers things such as Texas law regarding firearms, safe storage, & situational awareness. At the end of the class, you will be required to pass a written examination.

In-class time (lecture + test): 4-6 hours
Range time (shooting proficiency): 1 hour

*If you are a new shooter or need extra practice make sure to visit our Intro to Handgun and LTC Prep classes first.

What to Bring to Class

  • Valid ID
  • Paper & Pen for notes
  • Eye & ear protection*
  • Handgun, You will need a handgun of .22 caliber or higher for the range qualification (If you do not have a handgun rentals are available)
  • Ear and Eye protection (Rentals are available at the range)
  • 50 rounds of ammo*
  • Closed-toed shoes and no low cut shirts
  • Water/beverage
  • Lunch/Snack, Vending Machines are available  

Topics That Will Be Covered

  • Laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force,
  • Handgun use and safety, including use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns,
  • Non-violent dispute resolution,
  • Proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.

2. COMPLETE THE SHOOTING PROFICIENCY

Average 1 hour: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards and 10 rounds at 15 yards.

  • Experienced Shooters – May take steps 1 & 2 on the same day
  • New Shooters – You can do step 1

 

**IMPORTANT NOTE**
It is NOT recommended that you attempt both class time and shooting on the same day if you are not already proficient with a firearm.

3. SUBMIT DPS APPLICATION

4. SUBMIT FINGERPRINTS

Fingerprints are submitted to the state via IdentoGo. (everyone must complete this step). IdentoGo Locations.

Your Texas DPS application MUST BE COMPLETE prior to making your fingerprint appointment.

5. SUBMIT YOUR TEXAS LTC 100 DOCUMENT
